Healthy Participant Study for Children 5 to 15 Years Old

Why are we doing this research?

Cincinnati Children's is conducting a research study to see if listening to specific sounds (called auditory entrainment) can help improve learning and sensory symptoms in children with Fragile X Syndrome. Healthy controls are needed for comparison.

Who can participate?

Healthy children/adolescents 5 to 15 years old may be eligible to participate. Participants should have no history of developmental disabilities, developmental delays, or language delays.

What will happen in the study?

This study includes 4 visits to Cincinnati Children’s, each lasting approximately 3-4 hours. If you decide to join this study, the following things will happen either online or in person at a study visit.

Your child will have a/an:

  • Medical and psychological assessment
  • Developmental/cognitive testing
  • Neuropsychological testing via computer programs
  • Auditory entrainment
  • EEG (electroencephalography)- a test that measures brain activity

You, as the parent or guardian will

  • Answer questions about your child via questionnaires, checklists, and
    interviews

What are the good things that can happen from this research?

Your child may not receive any direct benefit from being in this study. When we finish the study, we hope to know more about developmental disorders (DDs). This may help others with DDs in the future.

What are the bad things that can happen from this research?

There are minimal risks to this study, including mild discomfort with testing procedures and potential loss of confidentiality. We will discuss all possible risks or discomforts with those interested in learning more about the study.

Will you/your child be paid to be in this research study?

Participants will receive $50 for each completed visit, up to $200 for time and effort.
