Same-Day Consultation and Procedure
What to Expect

What to Expect at the Same-Day Consultation and Procedure Program

Multiple appointments for a procedure can be cumbersome for a family's schedule, whether a child is 1 or 15. Our program allows patients who need the following procedures undergo a consultation and surgery on the same day:

  • Hernia repair
  • Testicular hydrocele repair
  • Circumcision

Our program is available at the Cincinnati Children's Liberty Campus on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Making an Appointment at the Same-Day Consultation and Procedure Program

Please contact us directly to schedule an appointment. Our schedulers will verify that your child's condition matches the Same-Day Consultation and Procedure Program's criteria and will work with you to schedule a time for your child's official diagnosis and surgery. You will receive two separate appointment times, both on the same day.

Before Your Appointment

A nurse will contact you before your child's appointment to prepare for the upcoming visit. During this call, we will:

  • Gather information about symptoms, health history and past treatments.
  • Collect past test results and medical records. (We'll provide instructions on how to share this information with us.)
  • Provide pre-visit and pre-surgery instructions.

During this call, we can also answer questions you have before your child's visit. Of course, you're welcome to call any time before or after your child's visit.

On the Day of Your Visit to the Same-Day Consultation and Procedure Program

Arriving At Your Appointment

Our services take place at the Liberty Campus on Tuesdays and Fridays. Please arrive 10 minutes before your scheduled time unless you are asked to arrive earlier. Be sure to bring your insurance card and a form of payment. You will also need to give consent for your child to receive care. If someone else will be taking your child to the appointment, please make sure we can reach you by phone.

At Your Appointment

First, your child will meet with a surgeon who will perform a physical examination to verify the original diagnosis and ensure that your child is able to have surgery that day. After the appointment with the surgeon, a team of nurses will walk you to surgery registration, where your child is taken back to surgery.

After Your Visit to the Same-Day Consultation and Procedure Program

You will receive an “After Visit Summary” after your child has recovered from surgery and is able to go home. It will include contact information for your child's care team, including how to reach the on-call provider. The day after surgery, an advanced practice nurse will call to check on how your child is feeling. There is no need for a follow-up appointment.
