Advanced Diagnostic Testing for Oncology, Hematology, and Immunology

The Clinical Laboratories within the Cancer & Blood Diseases Institute (CBDI) at Cincinnati Children’s provide specialized, high-quality diagnostic testing for pediatric and adult oncologic, hematologic, and immunologic disorders. Our laboratories integrate scientific advancements with clinical care, offering both routine and highly specialized assays to ensure accurate, timely, and actionable results.

Our Laboratories

Our lab is committed to providing the highest quality, comprehensive clinical testing available to aid in the detection, diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of immunologic disorders. We're committed to applying the latest scientific advances to enable leading-edge test development that improves patient care. Our testing is focused on the diagnosis and management of rare inborn errors of immunity (IEIs) and other disorders of the immune system.

We provide comprehensive protein, cellular, and genetic testing for red blood cell (RBC) disorders, offering crucial insights for accurate diagnosis and management. Our expertise includes testing for hemoglobinopathies, thalassemias, RBC membrane disorders, RBC enzymopathies, hereditary hemolytic anemias, and dyserythropoietic anemias.  Using capillary zone electrophoresis, our hemoglobin A1c testing can detect possible hemoglobin variants and beta thalassemia.

As part of an integrated hematology program, our laboratory collaborates closely with board-certified pediatric hematologists to ensure expert interpretation and clinical guidance. Partnering with Molecular Genetics specialists, we offer advanced genetic testing for inherited RBC disorders, enabling precise diagnostic evaluations and personalized treatment strategies.

We provide advanced flow cytometry-based clinical testing for hematologic and oncologic malignancies in both pediatric and adult patients. Our expertise includes specialized testing such as Children’s Oncology Group (COG) protocol Minimal Residual Disease (MRD) testing, Paroxysmal Nocturnal Hemoglobinuria (PNH) testing using CD59/FLAER, and HLA-B27 testing by flow cytometry along with other flow cytometry-based diagnostics.

These services enhance diagnostic precision, support clinical research, and contribute to improved patient outcomes. Through collaboration with CBDI’s clinical programs, we work to advance diagnostic accuracy and patient care while fostering cutting-edge research in hematology and oncology.

As part of the Hematology Program at Cincinnati Children's Cancer & Blood Diseases Institute, the Hemostasis & Thrombosis Laboratory (HTL) provides high-quality clinical testing to diagnose and manage various hematologic disorders. The HTL also serves as a reference laboratory for specialized testing in the greater Cincinnati area and beyond.

We are dedicated to applying scientific advances to promote efficient, cost-effective, and exceptional patient care through ongoing improvements and new test development. The HTL collaborates with researchers to support funded research projects, aiming to improve child health through high-quality research.

The CBDI Clinical Labs are committed to leading-edge, accurate, high-utility tests for patients, and we are continuously developing new diagnostic tests to improve patient diagnostics and therapeutic monitoring. Each of our four multidisciplinary laboratories is led by board-certified medical directors who are experts in their fields. Our medical directors are available to provide clinical consultation and expert test interpretation, ensuring healthcare providers receive precise insights for patient care.
