Liver Pathology
The Liver Pathology team at Cincinnati Children’s offers specialized consultative services grounded in decades of experience interpreting pediatric liver tissue. Our expertise spans metabolic, genetic, infectious, autoimmune, neoplastic, and vascular diseases of the liver, including rare and complex cases.
Collaborative Centers
Our pathologists closely collaborate with the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition which leads nationally in the diagnosis and management of pediatric cholestatic liver diseases. Diagnostic support is further enhanced by access to a dedicated Mass Spectrometry Laboratory.
Our liver pathologists partner with the Molecular and Genomic Pathology Services to provide cutting edge molecular testing for neoplastic liver disease utilizing our in-house comprehensive Next Generation sequencing CinCSeq panel, optimized to detect alterations unique to pediatric liver tumors. Testing is available upon clinician or referring pathologist request and completion of a requisition form.
Consultative Service
Our consultative service offers expert review of pediatric liver biopsies and surgical specimens, with integrated pathology interpretations that draw on collaboration with pediatric hepatologists and laboratory medicine. In cases with systemic involvement, we coordinate evaluations that include electron microscopy, special stains, and advanced biochemical testing. Our team also participates in national and international research and reference initiatives, supporting complex diagnostic and research needs.
