Cheryl Hoying, PhD, RN, to take on new role with the Joint Commission

Staff Bulletin.Senior Vice President of Patient Services Cheryl Hoying, PhD, RN, is leaving Cincinnati Children’s to take a position with the Joint Commission as their Chief Nursing Executive and executive vice president.

“This is a great opportunity for Cheryl to build on her exceptional accomplishments here over the past 13 years and be an ambassador for all that is good in nursing, patient care, quality and safety,” says Michael Fisher, president and CEO.

Hoying first came to Cincinnati Children’s in 2005. Under her leadership, the medical center achieved Magnet status in 2009, was re-designated in 2015, and has been granted a site visit for re-designation this April 23-25. She allocated more resources for staff enrichment to increase the BSN rate to 79.3 percent, the number of advanced practice nurses to 400 and the number of doctoral-prepared nurses to 40.

Says Steve Davis, MD, Chief Operating Officer, “In my 32-year career, I’ve worked with hundreds of exceptional nurses, but Cheryl is the most accomplished nursing executive I’ve known. For example, she spearheaded the development of the interprofessional practice model, which aligns physicians, nurses and other providers around what’s best for children. It really has set us apart from other organizations.”

Hoying reflected on her years at Cincinnati Children’s, saying, “It’s been a wonderful journey. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time here. It’s been busy, fun and very fulfilling. I’ve gotten to work with a great team of folks in Patient Services and throughout the entire organization. Knowing people are so committed to providing quality care to patients and families every day is very reassuring.”

Hoying will begin her new role with the Joint Commission in March.

Vice President of Patient Services Barb Tofani, MSN, RN, will serve as the interim leader and continue to move nursing and patient care forward.
