Alvin Crawford

Alvin Crawford, MD, professor emeritus and former director of the Crawford Spine Center at Cincinnati Children’s, was recently inducted into the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America Hall of Fame.

Crawford earned his MD in 1964 from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, graduating at the top of his class. He then enlisted in the Navy. During that time, he completed his surgical residencies, including one at Harvard University.

He came to Cincinnati Children’s in 1977, where he established his reputation as a leading expert in treating scoliosis and one of the nation’s foremost authorities on video-assisted thorascopic surgery.

Over the course of his career, Crawford has won numerous honors, including UC’s Daniel Drake Medal, the Great Living Cincinnatian Award and the University of Tennessee College of Medicine’s Distinguished Ambassador Medal.

He has contributed significant articles based on clinical research regarding pediatric orthopaedic management of hip, knee and spine conditions as well as musculoskeletal manifestations of neurofibromatosis in children.
