Kidney Transplant Program Expertise and Support

High-Volume Transplant Experience

We perform a high number of pediatric kidney transplants each year. In an average year, more than 200 patients receive care through our program. Our experience supports strong outcomes reported through national transplant data.

Advanced Therapies from Birth

We provide dialysis for babies born with kidney failure in close partnership with our Fetal Care team. This early coordination allows us to begin treatment at birth and plan for transplant when the time is right.

We are also growing our living donor program and increasing pre-emptive transplants, which may help some children avoid long periods on dialysis.

Coordinated, Whole-Child Care

Kidney disease can affect many parts of a child’s health. We work closely with specialists from urology, infectious disease, behavioral medicine and clinical psychology, nutrition, pharmacy, social work, and other specialists to support the whole child.

Most disciplines are built into our transplant evaluation clinic. This helps streamline visits and reduce extra appointments.

Dedicated Support at Every Stage

Each family works with a dedicated nurse coordinator who specializes in kidney disease and transplant care. Your coordinator helps manage testing, waitlist updates, appointments and education.

They remain your clinical point of contact from early evaluation through long-term follow-up after transplant.

Understanding the transplant process can feel overwhelming. Our team guides you step by step, starting with a coordinated transplant evaluation.

During one streamlined visit, your child meets with kidney specialists, surgeons and other experts. We review medical history, test results and overall health to decide if transplant is the right next step. You leave with one clear plan and time to ask questions.

We also provide expert second opinions for families seeking clarity about diagnosis, timing or treatment options. Whether you are early in the process or already listed elsewhere, we can review records and help you make an informed decision.

Increasing Access to Top-ranked Care

Cincinnati Children’s is increasing access to kidney transplant patients in northern and eastern Ohio through our collaboration with Akron Children’s Hospital. Akron Children’s patients can benefit from shorter hospital stays at Cincinnati Children’s before and after a kidney transplant, and they can also get their follow-up care in Akron, closer to home.
