Summer research programs provide opportunities for high school, college students
Calling all students at the high school, undergraduate and graduate level who are considering careers in biomedical research and clinical practice. Cincinnati Children’s sponsors the following biomedical outreach programs annually that attract the brightest and the best and provide a variety of experience.

High school programs
- One-day job shadow – For high school juniors and seniors, as well as adults considering a career change. Third Friday of each month, except during flu season. Sign up early, as slots fill up quickly. For more information, visit https://www.cincinnatichildrens.org/education/community/job-shadow.
- Hospital volunteering – Open to students, 15 years and older, as of June 1. Local college students can apply for a volunteer opportunity at http://www.cincinnatichildrens.org/giving/volunteer/opportunities/college-students/. Minimum six-month commitment required.
- High school science student symposium – One-day symposium for juniors and seniors, April 1. All area high schools are invited to send their two best science students and a teacher or counselor for a day of science career workshops and hands-on presentations in different areas of the hospital and research foundation. - Summer internship program – For graduating high school seniors considering a career in pediatric medicine (MD, MD/PhD or PhD). Eight-week part-time clinical shadowing and research program from June 12 to August 6. Requires excellent GPA, standardized test scores and evidence of leadership. - Biomedical Research Internship for Minority Students (BRIMS) – Full-time, nine-week program for 16 Cincinnati-area minority high school seniors and college freshmen. Work with a research mentor to pursue paid basic science, translational or clinical biomedical research project from June 4 to August 2. For more information, contact Cindy Bachurski. Undergraduate student research programs
College students from all over the country who are interested in pursuing full-time biomedical research opportunities at Cincinnati Children’s or UC College of Medicine during the summer can apply to five programs with one application through the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program umbrella site: https://med.uc.edu/SURF. - Summer Medical Student Respiratory Research Fellowship (SMURRF) – For medical students to do pediatric pulmonary research at Cincinnati Children’s in the summer between M1 and M2. - Medical Student Summer Research Program (MSSRP) – For students from any US medical school who want to do research in labs at UC College of Medicine or Cincinnati Children’s in the summer between M1 and M2.
