Your Care Team Puts Patients and Families First

At Cincinnati Children’s, we offer extensive resources for patients and families, and our care team is here to assist you at every turn. This means making sure you understand your child’s diagnosis and therapy options, easing the stress of hospital visits, telling you about additional resources, and providing comfort and hope in the midst of sometimes difficult situations.

Inpatient hematology / oncology treats children with many different healthcare needs, including cancer treatment, blood disorders, immune disorders and vascular abnormalities.

You may meet many different healthcare team members during your stay:

  • Clinical manager
  • Charge nurse -- helps coordinate the activities on the unit and is always available for questions, comments or concerns

Routine vital signs (blood pressure and temperature) are generally taken every four hours.

Healthcare Team Rounds

Healthcare team rounds are an important part of your child’s care.

  • Families are encouraged to participate in family-centered rounds.
  • Rounds are daily 8 am to noon. Please limit your time in the hallways to allow for quiet time during these important rounds.
  • Ask your nurse about your family’s role in healthcare team rounds.
  • All rooms are single-patient rooms.
  • Parents / guardians may be with their child 24 hours a day.
  • Visiting Hours: 8:30 am to 8:30 pm
  • Please check with your nurse regarding the unit guidelines for visitors.
  • Any visitors other than parents, grandparents or caregivers must check-in at the front desk.

Make sure your child's armband stays on! The nurse needs to check it every time he or she is administering medicine.

Playroom

  • The playroom is on A5C
  • Your child may use the playroom if your child has not had a fever in 24 hrs or your child is not in isolation. If you have questions, check with your child’s nurse.
  • Playroom hours: 9:30 am to noon, 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm and 6 pm to 8 pm, Monday-Friday; 10 am to noon and 2 pm to 4 pm, Saturday, Sunday and holidays

Translation Services

All patients and their families have a right to receive medical information in their preferred language. For families that do not speak English, Cincinnati Children’s will assist with language services. Qualified medical interpreters are provided for you at no cost during your child’s medical appointments. Learn more about translation services

Cincinnati Children’s Family Pet Center

Cincinnati Children’s Family Pet Center enables some patients on extended stays to visit with their own family pets while at the medical center.

Young Adult Cancer Center

  • Patients must have an access card to enter the Young Adult Cancer Center. Contact your Child Life specialist to get an access card. Once patients have an access card, they may use the Young Adult Cancer Center at their convenience during open hours.
  • Patients in isolation may not have access cards, but they can use the Young Adult Cancer Center room during private sessions. These private sessions can be arranged through your Child Life specialist.
  • Contact your Child Life specialist for a calendar of events. The calendar is also located outside of the Young Adult Cancer Center.
  • Hours: 8 am to 11 pm

Comprehensive Fertility Care & Preservation Program

We believe that fertility is an important aspect of medical care for every patient and requires consideration even during childhood. The goal of the Comprehensive Fertility Care & Preservation Program is to meet with patients whose medical condition or treatment regimens place them at risk for fertility complications in the future.

  • Parents / guardians may stay with their child 24 hours a day. No sleep rooms are available on the unit.
  • Feel free to call your social worker or chaplain any time you feel overwhelmed or need help.
  • Down the hall from our A5 unit we are equipped with a washer, dryer and showers for parents use.
    • Laundry keys are available at the A5 front desk.
  • A parent lounge is located in the west wing of the A5C unit and has the following:
      • Refrigerator
      • Microwave
      • Coffee machine
      • Phone
      • TV
      • Computer
      • Wireless

  • Please ask all visitors to wash their hands before and after visiting your child’s room.
  • No one is allowed to visit if they have been sick recently or currently feel sick.
  • To protect your child, do not allow live plants, flowers or latex balloons on the unit.
