From the Director

Arnold W. Strauss, MDThis Research Annual Report should encourage us to reflect on the stellar contributions of Arnold W. Strauss, MD, seventh B.K. Rachford Professor, Chair of the Department of Pediatrics, and Director of the Cincinnati Children’s Research Foundation.

During his seven-year tenure, Dr. Strauss recruited 21 division directors and one center director, attracted hundreds of faculty to our research and clinical missions, and presided over a rise in annual NIH funding from $93.7 million to $143 million. Dr. Strauss strengthened our research pipeline by inaugurating the Office of Faculty Development and the Office of Pediatric Clinical Fellows and by renewing our Child Health Research Career Development Award from NICHD. He led the Board of Trustees to approve millions of dollars in funding for internal programs such as the Trustee Awards, the Gap Awards and the Redesign and Research Innovation Pilot (RIP) funding programs.

He worked tirelessly to advocate for pediatric research networks throughout Ohio and the nation. Our new Clinical Sciences Building (Location T), now nearing completion, brings our usable research space to nearly 1 million square feet -- the most of any pediatric institution in the U.S.

Dr. Strauss’ foresight set in motion the accomplishments highlighted in this publication. As we move forward with exciting initiatives in discovery science, clinical research, and educational programs, we confront the future of pediatric research with confidence and inspiration. That future will see us build upon our unique blend of clinical, research and educational achievement. Our mission of improving child health and transforming care will be strengthened by our national and international research collaborations, clinical partnerships around the globe, and training programs that prepare doctors to work anywhere in the world. Our spirit of innovation and collaboration attracts the best and the brightest, the leaders of tomorrow who are already building a brighter future for child health. Thank you, Arnie.
