These findings are significant because they show that when an adolescent is the target of peer victimization that a friend’s response to such negative events impact later depressive symptoms. Specifically, protective responses by friends (i.e. that guy is the problem not you) negated increases in depressive symptoms over time as a result of peer victimization and blaming or negative responses by friends increased the impact of peer victimization on increases in depressive symptoms over time.
Froehlich, TE; Fogler, J; Barbaresi, WJ; Elsayed, NA; Evans, SW; Chan, E. Using ADHD Medications to Treat Coexisting ADHD and Reading Disorders A Systematic Review. Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics. 2018; 104(4):619-637.
Although ~40% of children with ADHD have coexisting learning disorders (LD), is unclear whether ADHD medications improve symptoms and functioning for this prevalent group.  This article, the first systematic review of the evidence regarding medication effects in children with comorbid ADHD and LD, provides important guidance to clinicians and families when developing treatment plans for children with ADHD and this common comorbidity.
Esbensen, AJ; Hoffman, EK; Shaffer, R; Chen, E; Patel, L; Jacola, L. Reliability of parent report measures of behaviour in children with Down syndrome. Journal of Intellectual Disability Research. 2018; 62(9):785-797.
Clinical trials for individuals with Down syndrome have been hampered in part by the dearth of validated measures appropriate for use with this population. This manuscript begins to address this concern by evaluating the psychometric properties of the Child Behavior Checklist (a commonly used screening tool developed for typically developing children) among school-age children with Down syndrome.
Shaffer, RC; Wink, LK; Ruberg, J; Pittenger, A; Adams, R; Sorter, M; Manning, P; Erickson, CA. Emotion Regulation Intensive Outpatient Programming Development, Feasibility, and Acceptability. Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders. 2019; 49(2):495-508.
This publication details the development of an intensive outpatient program to address emotion regulation in youth ages 8-12 with ASD and other neurodevelopmental disorders. A chart review was conducted including participants who completed the clinical program during the first several years of its development. Results demonstrated that the program was feasible to implement and that families were very satisfied with the program. Initial pilot outcomes indicated children significantly improved on standardized scales related to emotion regulation. This publication bridges a gap between clinical care, outcome measurement, and intervention research and it was pivotal in obtaining funding for a research trial of the program.

Diagnostic services for children with autism spectrum disorder are in high demand but low supply.  This publication described the development and implementation of a timely, efficient, and high-quality multidisciplinary assessment model which improved access to diagnostic evaluations for children younger than 3 years with concerns for possible autism spectrum disorder.
