HDL best known function is to participate in reverse cholesterol efflux, that is the removal of cholesterol from the artery wall and serve as the transport protein to take cholesterol to the liver. We also know that HDL likely participates in other roles such as modulating endothelial function, protecting against LDL oxidation and perhaps even interfering with LDL proteoglycan binding, the first step in the initiation of atherosclerosis. We are currently developing assays in our laboratory to test a variety of these functions.
